We come together on Good Friday as the people of the cross. People who celebrate the “good” found in a barbaric execution technique, perfected by an empire in order to display their power and dominance to anyone who would defy their rule.
We are a people who declare that victory was won through the death of the one we follow and that honor was bestowed upon the one who died a shameful death.
We are a people who declare that freedom and life come not from the protection of these things by any means, but rather by the laying down of one’s life and the handing over of one’s freedom in order that we might also lay down our own life and hand over our own freedom to the will of the one true God.
We are a peculiar people, and today is a peculiar day. Today is the day that we declare that Jesus freely gave over his freedom and his life, knowing that his death was the will of the Father. Today is the day that we celebrate the honor of Jesus as he was lifted up, crucified, displaying the glory of God for all to see and dying a death that defeated sin for all time. Today is the day that we celebrate that Jesus is Lord and is able to redeem even the most violent attempts by humankind to declare otherwise.
Today is Good Friday!
